Back in August this year, I was invited by the folks at Lucasfilm to join a group of writers to produce articles for both ILM.com and Skysound.com. Of course, I jumped at the chance to get involved. This all happened while I was on a family holiday, so rather than sit and read by the pool, I wrote up eighteen ideas for articles covering a multitude of work spanning the decades of ILM and Skywalker Sound’s existence.
The reply? “Let’s do them… all!”
With that, I began fleshing out some of the ideas further, and along with colleagues at Lucasfilm (that feels odd to type), we decided to hone in on an article about Ghostbusters II, focusing on its very own ugly little spud, Slimer.
I’d been quite taken with the animatronic Slimer head that I saw encased in the corridors of Lucasfilm at the Presidio in San Francisco and knew there would be some great stories behind its now-shrunken green latex and exposed servos and pistons.
I was quickly put in touch with Robin Shelby (performer), Mark Siegel (sculptor and performer), and Al Coulter (animatronic engineer and performer), three artists who had different involvements with Slimer. Each gave me a unique perspective, deepening my appreciation for the art of filmmaking even more.
The article was released on Halloween 2024. You can read it by hitting the link below.
Look out for more articles to come; my next one should be out in January 2025.
