Legendary Editor Walter Murch Joins The Filmumentaries Podcast for Episode 125 — Celebrating Five Years of Behind-the-Scenes Stories
London, 24th April 2025 – The Filmumentaries Podcast, the celebrated show that spotlights the untold stories behind classic and contemporary films, has reached its 125th episode — and its five-year milestone. To mark the occasion, host Jamie Benning welcomes back one of the podcast’s most distinguished guests: legendary editor, sound designer, and author Walter Murch.
Murch, whose credits include Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, and The Godfather, joins Benning to discuss his forthcoming book, Suddenly Something Clicked (to be published by Faber & Faber on 8 May 2025). In the conversation, the two explore the evolution of film editing, the mysterious connections between cinema and human perception, the metaphorical power of sound design, and the future of filmmaking in the age of AI.
During the episode, Murch shares a remarkable story about walking the streets of New York with George Lucas in the late 1970s — and the strange, shared hallucination they experienced that perfectly illustrates the power of expectation and misdirection, both in life and in cinema.
