On episode 127 of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I speak with film journalist and author Max Evry about his book A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune – An Oral History. The book offers the most comprehensive behind-the-scenes look yet at the making of David Lynch’s Dune (1984) — a film often considered a flawed epic, but one whose cult status has only grown over time.
In our conversation, Max explains how the project expanded from a short cult film guide into a 560-page deep dive, featuring over 60 interviews with key cast and crew, including David Lynch himself. We talk about the challenges of researching and writing an unauthorised book, what it was like piecing together the story from so many voices, and why Dune (1984) remains such a singular film in sci-fi history.
